Giant Red Poppy

Painting With Inks

$0

Do you dream of unleashing your creativity and creating beautiful watercolour art?

Maybe you feel a little pang of envy when you admire gorgeous watercolour art on social media and think, ‘Wow, I wish I could express myself like that?’ Maybe you’re fascinated by watercolours but feel panic in your stomach when you think about working with a brush dipped in water?

Something holds you back. A tiny voice warns that you might make a mess or even worse, that you’re crazy for even thinking you can paint. Using inks on canvas is your key to losing this fear and realising that water is actually your best friend when it comes to creating stunning art.

From the delicate, luminous layers to the serendipitous ‘accidents’ that happen when the colours move, watercolour is an alluring and unique medium. It’s also one of the best starting points for new and aspiring artists.

My free course will help you unlock your innate creativity and infinite possibilities with this gorgeous medium. It’s all about making a stroke, observing what happens, and making another. Learn how to precisely place each brushstroke of colour, drop colour into a wet shape, and trust the inks to do their magic.

I passionately believe there is artist DNA in all of us. My absolute love in life is teaching, sharing and seeing my artists succeed to become artists in their own right. — Di Kelly

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Artist Di Kelly has more than 38 years’ experience making magic with watercolour. She knew watercolour would be her favourite medium the very first moment she let ink drop and cascade into water. As she watched the colour spill across the paper to create a mysterious organic shape, she knew she was hooked.

To this day, she is fascinated with the unique spontaneity of this graceful medium. Her love affair with watercolours led her to publish her first book, 'The Art Of Watering Colour’, a helpful guide to watercolours for budding artists. She’d love to help you fall in love with watercolour and its endless possibilities.

The Giant Red Poppy course is designed to be the perfect stepping stone for anyone wanting to begin a watercolour journey. Suitable for beginners of all ages, it’s ideal for people looking to learn basic watercolour techniques and how to see the world like a watercolour artist.

The course covers finding simple organic shapes to create your own red poppy, deciding on your unique and original composition, and letting go of fear to drop rich ink colours into water shapes. I’ll also show you how to create colour vibration, textures and contrast with pastels once you’ve completed your watercolour poppy.

You’ll learn how to plan a composition and how to identify shapes and angles in an image (useful for any art project!) You’ll learn the most important watercolour techniques, including wet-in-wet and controlled washes. Most importantly, I hope you’ll discover a newfound self-confidence.

Art is a journey and artists are always learning, even professional ones. If there’s anything I want you to take away from my class, it’s to let yourself make mistakes (these are necessary, you will not progress without them!) and have fun. Laughter is the best antidote to making a mess of your work. My aim is to leave you feeling enlightened, empowered and encouraged.

Simply follow through the videos with the instruction worksheet.

You can take as long as you like to complete the course. The course offers 51 minutes of free video instruction, plus an instruction worksheet.

Great question! My philosophy is to build your artist kit gradually. All of the following materials have earned their place in my kit due to their usefulness and versatility. Here’s what I recommend:

- 1 x large white primed canvas in any size
- 500 ml bottles of ink in Magenta, Red, Phthalo Blue, and Yellow
- 1 x large mop brush
- 1 x large 8cm flat nylon brush
- 1 x rigger brush
- 1 x red pastel
- Assorted oil crayons in blue, aqua and mauve
- 1 x spray bottle
- 1 x granulation medium (optional)

Rest assured, the materials you’ll need don’t need to be expensive. You can look for second-hand materials or work with art equipment you have laying around the house. If you already have a canvas, inks or brushes at home, great — start with what you have and experiment.

If you look for second-hand materials, the costs might be as low as $30 or less. You may choose to invest in premium materials. In this case, you might expect to pay up to $200.
